Question STI 2011 Pistols

What do you guys think about STI Pistols? Particularly interested in the Hi-Cap for carry in .40

I've built and used STI guns since before they were called STI...

The ONLY problems I've encountered were as follows:

1. The full size models don't like to lock the slide back reliably on the last shot (but then, it was NEVER designed to do that ).

This is not a problem for IPSC as you're NEVER suppose to run the dry. But for IDPA and TSA it is a problem. Personally, I prefer to have my slide lock back on empty.

2. Mag springs. I've had some issues in the past with carrying them loaded for extended periods of time, but this was years ago.

3. The VIP (compact model) is NOT suitable for carry IMO. Too many reliability issues.

4. Over time, there are some minor issues with the polymer frames, but I have had guns go 150,000 rounds!!

Other than that, they are a GREAT pistol to build on and compete with. I am especially interested in the new Aluminum lower grip frame to used in conjunction with with the steel upper frame. I think it will fix the most (if not all) of the problems mentioned...

Question

Why in the world would anyone want an aluminum alloy lower (in place of the black polymer one)???

Over time, the polymer frames can have a tiny bit of movement in them (i.e., wobble from upper/lower separation). The plastic lowers also flex when you squeeze them hard, especially if you grind and whittle on them like we do.

While these are not a major issues, the aluminum lower with the beefy steel upper rails makes for a firm, solid grip while still affording a lighter, fast handling gun.

I think the steel/aluminum combo in the frame will help solve "slide-lock-open" problems as well...

Thumbs up

Daniel Horner was at my range just the other day (he just got back from a tour in Afghanistan). He brought his STI .40 with aluminum grip to show me...

He has put 20,000 rounds of .40 S&W through it with ZERO problems. The trigger was great, the slide/frame/grip fit was all still nice and tight, and the mags eject nicely!!!

I'm impressed to say the least...
