View Full Version : Qualify With Your Carry Gun--Here's an Easy Solution

Hey all,

Every once in awhile, I like to "qualify" with the handguns I carry. I score the targets and keep them in my closet to document my training. Sometimes I use the course from Ayoob's "In the Gravest Extreme," sometimes I use an old FBI qualification course, or the course used by the police in a state I where I used to live. Today, I tried something a little different and I think you might like it.

I rolled a blue and white B27/"Milk Bottle" target out to 75 feet and fired one magazine into it with a basic two handed grip. Then I began running the target BACK, stopping at each shooting position: 75, 50, 30, 21, 15 and 9. At each range, I shot another magazine load till I ran out of ammo at the 9 feet line.

First I used my trusty S&W 645. I had no malfunctions and scored 97% (100% if you score the Milk Bottle). Then I used my little Para Black Watch Companion. I did short stroke the trigger twice and bump the slide release once, but again shot a 97% (100% inside the FBI Milk Bottle). Both targets are safely tucked away in my closet.

What did I learn?

I shoot a traditional double action about as well as the new light double action. If I'm going to carry the LDA, I need to practice more with it so I remember to roll the trigger all the way IN and all the way back OUT. Lighter 185 grain HPs kick less than 230 ammo (duh). I feel comfortable using a target focus from about 30 feet in. While my shots were centered up and down, something like 80% where a little left of center. Using the groove of my index finger on the trigger may be pushing my shots left of center. (The trigger reach is too short to use the pad of my finger).

Mostly, I feel this is a super easy-to-remember way to "qualify" with a handgun, document my skills and have a great time at the range.

If you want to try this, I hope you will share what you learned here on the forum.
