View Full Version : Mag Safety?

I have a Browning High Power with a mag disconnect safety. Even if there is a round in the chamber, the gun won't fire if the mag is removed. My question is this: Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Can it be removed?

Yes it can be removed. It is a thing, neither good nor bad. It is a design feature some like it some dont. It is easier to get a good trigger with it removed but still possible. It is against IDPA rules to remove it.

The magazine safety is a safety feature that gives you an easy way to make your gun inoperable, to protect you from a gun grab, to make the handgun safe(er) during storage, and perhaps a bit more "idiot resistant." So, unless you have a darned good reason for removing it, I says, "Don't do it!"
If you want a High Power type pistol withOUT a magazine safety, trade yours for a new AR24 pistol. How about upgrading to a Wilson Combat CQB Compact in 9mm? No magazine safety. Check them out here:

If you think removing the safety will help you shoot better, try this experiment. Set-up a target at 50-75 feet. Take a double action revolver and slow fire a 10-12 shot group DOUBLE ACTION, then get a fresh target and slow fire a 10-12 shot group SINGLE action. Now compare the groups. This is about as extreme a test of trigger pull weight and length as you are likely to find. See for yourself if a lighter trigger automatically means smaller groups. You may be shocked at the results.
Also, since you might carry your High Power, you might have to use it in public. Do you really want to explain to a jury of gun novices, housewives and couch potatoes why you REMOVED a proven safety device from you inherently dangerous handgun? Yes, magazine safeties really have saved peoples lives. Removing the magazine safety WILL be seen as reckless by most people. The last High Power I tested had a nice, crisp trigger pull right from the factor. I wouldn't mess with it.

Well, here is my take, as an LEO. For over a century we all carried revolvers without them, 1911s don't have them, Glocks don't have them, SIGS don't have them, Beretta-M9s don't have them= have I named just about all the issue weapons used by American Law Enforcement. I just don't see the need. If I am in the proper FF guard retention postion, and someone has gotten that close to my weapon(shame on me), I should be able to handle the attacker and my weapon without dropping my ammunition and disabling my weapon. Accordingly, if I am in that unfortunate circumstance and drop that mag, disabling my deadly lifesaving device in the throws of heated combat, I better have been a member of Straight Blast Gym for many years in order to subdue my opponent with physical prowess. None of my weapons will have a mag disconnect.

That's a pretty screwy statement, In fact the hole post is, After singing the praises of mag disconnects you list and recommend guns that dont have them?
If someone has a Hi-power and wants a Hi-power type pistol without a magazine disconnect remove the magazine disconnect.
