Anyone have any thoughts on the S&W M&P 45? I found a good deal on one and I'm thinking seriously about it...

Brad,
Check the mags out real good, especially the feed lips. A few that I've looked at had sub-standard mags with defective feed lips (crooked with burrs). I think its a good gun but I opted to wait until I knew I could get good mags for it.
Most of the ones that I've seen used locally at the club & sanctioned matches seem to run fine- very few glitches. John Card comes to mind, he is running a 45 and a 9mm and they seem to run good, as I recall his 45 had decent looking mags though. I've seen no crappy mags on the 9mm version yet, only the 45.

Can we get replacement parts for the M&P or is it like the Springfield XD, where we have to ship the gun back to the factory to get it fixed when something breaks?

My experience with S&W is they will send you the parts, if you get someone on the phone who tells you to send in the gun hang up and call back, I once had a S&W rep insist I had to send the gun back for a new rear sight blade, next rep I talked to sent me the blade, told me I'd break the nut replacing it so should gert one of those also and have a nice day and give him a call if I needed anything else.

I had the opportunity to test fire a S&W M&P 45 today. I was considering buying the gun (and haven't made up my mind yet, but probably won't go for it at this point) and thankfully the owner offered me this chance to shoot the gun first.
Frankly I found I really like the ergonomics and most of the controls. Accuracy was just fine, with nothing out of the ordinary happening, and recoil is what I'd expect from a 45ACP. The trigger in particular was really good, and infinitely better than any Glock or XD I've tried - though I must also add this pistol did have a professional trigger job. I didn't like the manual safety, which is a feature I thought desirable on this model. My grip routinely bumped the safety lever up when loading/reloading - I consider this not good.
On the whole I was impressed with the gun, but would have to remove the manual safety (which I've heard is a pretty easy task) to make it work well for me in the long term. As a final note, I think if I had to choose between the S&W M&P, Glock, XD, and H&K, then I'd choose the S&W. Each has good and bad points, but the S&W is a really nice all-around package.

Brad,
I thought the M&P40 would be a nice addition to have and maybe use as a duty gun also. Sometimes the 1911 gets a little too heavy and I wanted a 40 to go along with the Glock17.
I picked up a MP40, no lock, no mag safety model. There are good and bad points after using it for 6 months. I feel S&W ALMOST got the grip right. It just does not force my hand up tight into the beavertail like a 1911 or Glock does. But the grip is still comfortable enough and easy to get a full grasp of in a duty rig.
It points superbly for me, just like a 1911 or Glock. Sits almost as low in the hand. The controls are not interfered with by my digits. I tend to like it the more I use it all things considered.

Brad, I don't know if you know this or not but the manual thumb safety is optional on the M&P 45. You can order/get it without one. I think if you get the brown one it has to come with it.
