I'm in the market for a carry gun. I like the look and feel of the Springfield XD. Anyone had any problems with them?

We picked up an XD Tactical in 9MM a while back to use for Competition. At about 2,400 rounds the extractor broke. :( We tried to get Springfield to send us one and they refused. They made us send the gun back to them for repairs. UPS & FED EX both came up with rules where the handguns have to be sent overnight (to and from) the dealer, this was $60 out of pocket!!

So, we sent the gun to SA. About a week later the gun came back. It ran for about 2,500 rounds this time and guess what? Same problem, broken extractor.

They made us sent the gun back again and we DID. ANOTHER $60 OUT THE WINDOW. We got it fixed and then sold the damn thing at a loss. :(

BOTTOM LINE: I will NEVER own a gun I can't get parts for, period.

Cost of Gun: $500

Cost of Shipping it back to the factory TWICE: $120

Having a gun you can't get parts for: Useless :(

I had an early one and the slide wouldn't always lock open on the last shot. Other than that it was good.

DR, what generation was it that you had?

I had an early model SA XD and the slide refused to lock open, too... :(

So, I went back to M1911's.

FWIW: My son has a newer one and it works fine...go figure?

It was the long slide Tactical model, so I guess that's a Generation 3 maybe??

So, DR, is there ANYTHING you like about the XD?

Actually, I liked the gun the 1st time I saw it...

Back when they first brought it in from Croatia I walked into the gun shop and the guys were all gathered around the gun, laughing and making fun of it (NO, these were NOT my guys! )...

They saw me walk in and said, "Hey, D.R. what do you think of this?" and handed me the gun. I looked it over and said, "Very ingenious...Looks like a Sig upper, a Glock lower with a CZ style grip."

I liked the gun, and I figured if there were some problems with it, we'd find out in time. Nobody shoots guns like us Americans do, that's why I waited to buy one.

I saw a few show up in my classes. The slides wouldn't always lock back, but they worked. The trigger stroke was a bit long, but I liked the trigger.

So, when Springfield picked it up and put their name on in, I knew only time would tell. Later on, when I thought they were a pretty good gun, I got one...

He may have been asking about whether it was the XD-M as opposed to the old XD.

Having owned a Tactical XD tactical I would compare it to a Fiat. You gotta keep two since one is likely to be in the shop. Shoot-ability is nice but there are other guns that are shoot-able and a bit more maintainable. I think it's durability is what the issue is and if you can't get parts to repair your own gun I don't want much to do with it. When its shortcomings became clear I moved on.

If you're happy with it, great, but of the serious shooters I know NONE of them uses an XD or XD-M. I'd try a S&W M&P or a Glock to compare. In terms of self-maintenance and parts availability nothing beats the Glock though my choice is the M&P.

So, the XD is no good? I got one and haven't had any trouble with it.

Damn, I swear you people like to speed read...

Like I said earlier, I liked the gun the first time I saw it. When Springfield put their name on it, I bought one. I didn't like the decision Springfield Armory made NOT TO SELL ME PARTS and I didn't like the fact that I had to spend $120 shipping it back and forth to them for repairs.

Unless they have fixed the extractor problem it's no good. :(

And even if they have fixed the problem, if you can't get parts for it what good is it? :(

It's a brilliantly designed gun. Too bad they have a quality control problem and too bad they won't sell parts for it. :(

Like Gutshot said, there are better choices like GLOCK and S&W M&P.

I ran 2 of them for awhile. Both were 5" tactical models. One in 9mm and the other in 40. I had Rich Dettonhauser of Canyon Creek do the triggers on both. I found them to be very reliable but not as much as a Glock. As DR says they are very well made and designed guns but the factory support is abysmal.

I'm used to a very short reset on the trigger from being a long time 1911 shooter and even after Dettonhauser shortened it by 1/2 I still found out the hard way that the reset was STILL too long for me.
At one of the first matches they had at ITI there was this stage that had you shooting a fast lateral moving target with a no-shoot at each end and another offset to near middle. You had to shoot this target a bunch of times as it sped across and everyone seemed to mess this up (you had to keep stopping for the no shoot in the middle. Well under stress I pressed air several times instead of bang and parked both guns immediately after that.

As it turns out a stock Glock which I hated at the time had 1/2 the reset that a worked over XD had. I still haven't seen one that had a short enough reset to suit me. I'd say if you're an ex revolver shooter or just used to coming way off the trigger ala Rob Leatham every time you press you'll be fine with one but until SA comes off the parts they can just go pound sand. I had to get my parts from other smiths who were hoarding them.
