It's an administrative (as opposed to shooting) position usually used when entry teams are stacking up and don't want to cover each other with their handgun muzzles. SUL means "south" or pointing straight down. If you google it you should be able to find some pics. While in use many instructors/shooters don't like it as uncomfortable and not very stable/secure. It's also damn uncomfortable for me.

D.R. has a far more efficient, effective and secure variation.

D.R. has a far more efficient, effective and secure variation.I prefer the "Side Guard" position as opposed to "SUL" where the pistol is pointing at my pecker! :D The Side Guard is similar to the Sentry Position shown below:

Sentry Position: Officer Standing Guard while his partner cuffs suspect.

Side Guard Position: From the "Sentry Position" just move the off hand away from the body and turn sideways towards the direction of the threat. This allows you to open doors, talk on a cell phone, use a flashlight, etc.

Just pull the gun up flat against your chest, one handed, with the strong hand thumb up and use the strong side pectoral as a position locater for your thumb. The muzzle should be pointing down towards the off hand side on a 45 degree angle.

It's a lot more comfortable than SUL and you can float in-and-out of the Sentry Position, into the Side Guard and/or in-and-out of the Guard Shooting Position as well.

Sounds good! Makes sense. Would love to see a picture of it...
